5 Great Study Habits to Help You Focus

It happens to everyone. You’ve been staring at your textbook for fifteen minutes and the words on the page are just not registering in your brain. It might be that you’re having trouble understanding an idea, it might just be that your memory just can’t hold on to the information. Regardless, you’re stuck and it is starting to stress you out. Before you close up your book for good, here are some study tips to get your mind rolling again.

1)      Move. A surprising number of problems can be fixed by taking five or ten minutes to put your body into action. Get away from the computer or your desk for a while to give your brain a break. Go for a quick walk, even if it’s just to the bathroom and back.

2)      Nap. Seriously. Sleep is one of the most important factors of productive brain activity, along with diet and exercise. Clocking in enough shut eye can be difficult when you’re juggling work, school and family, but getting enough sleep has to be a priority in your daily schedule. Try to squeeze in a 30 minute power nap sometime during the day, and you’ll notice a huge spike in your overall energy levels.

3)      Ask for help. You should never hesitate to reach out to a teacher or fellow student to ask for help, no matter how silly your question may be. For example, if you’re well into your office administration diploma and are still having trouble with setting fonts in your word processing program, you should speak up and seek advice from someone who can steer you in the right direction. Teachers are in the classroom to help students understand a specific topic, and being available to answer questions is part of that. Plus if you’re having trouble with a concept in your material, chances are there’s at least one other person with your exact problem who’s too shy to ask. Break the ice!

4)      Try to explain the material to someone else. Even if you feel like you don’t understand a subject completely, sitting down with someone else to discuss the ideas really helps in breaking them down. Having trouble with payroll regulations for those accounting courses in Toronto? Think about how you’d explain it to someone who’s studying a completely different field. Approaching ideas from a different perspective will help you build you a better grasp of them.

5)      Use a mnemonic. A mnemonic a mental trick used to remember information. Everyone from healthcare workers (yes, even doctors!) to grocery shoppers can create a silly sentence where the first letter of each word is the same first letter of the thing you’re trying to memorize. For example, for all of you in IT courses, remember the types of protocol data units with Do Some People Fear Binary? That’s Data, Segment, Packet, Frame and Bit. If you remember that silly sentence, it will que your brain to remember what the letters of each word stand for in relation to the IT concept. Try it out for yourself!
