Is Learning-by-Doing Really Better than Traditional Lecture Learning?

One question that comes up frequently when people are searching for educational courses to advance their careers are whether classes conducted in a traditional lecture learning environment or those that utilize the learning-by-doing method are better. Before answering this question, we will take a look at what each learning method is, first.

Traditional Lecture Learning

During each lesion, the material is presented in a variety of formats, such as in audio, video, and written instruction. While working on each lesson, the student has the opportunity to actually put into practice the materials they are learning, such as using a simulation, to further reinforce learning objectives.

The main benefit of learning-by-doing is students tend to remember the course materials much longer and have a better understanding of how the learning objectives relate to real world work environments. In addition, the learning needs of each individual student is the focus for learning-by-doing. As such, students are encouraged to work at their own pace and successfully master each learning objective in their lessons before moving onto the next set of learning objectives.

Further, students are not penalized if they need more time to complete their lessons and master objectives. They are not under any pressure to try to attempt to keep up with the rest of the class. Rather, they are given the ability to complete lessons within flexible completion guidelines. As a result, students, who complete course work using the learning-by-doing method of instruction tend to earn much higher grades than other students, who completed comparable courses using tradition lecture learning methods.

Now that you understand the general differences between the two learning methods, which one do you think is a better way of learning? Since each person is an individual, there is no right or wrong answer to which one is better. If you answered learning-by-doing, then you are probably more of a hands-on type of person, who learns new material easier by doing, rather than listening to lectures.
